The SOLTRAIN initiative, established in 2009 and currently funded as SOLTRAIN+ until 2026 by the Austrian Development Agency, is implemented by AEE INTEC in collaboration with nine country partners.

Research Overview
Its goal is to support these countries in moving from reliance on fossil fuels to adopting renewable energy-based system, with a particular focus on renewable heating and cooling (RHC) technologies and energy efficiency. The initiative focuses on capacity building through training programs, awareness raising to inform the public about the benefits of RHC technologies, advancing research and development (R&D), and supporting policymakers in developing solar thermal roadmaps. Additionally, SOLTRAIN offers co-funding for demonstration systems and promotes Gender & Diversity (G&D) initiatives to increase women’s participation in the traditionally male-dominated energy sector.
To date, SOLTRAIN has made significant strides in education and technology. It has conducted over 200 training courses, equipping 5,000 experts in solar thermal systems, provided bursaries to over 27 students focusing on solar thermal energy. SOLTRAIN has built diverse demonstration systems, including solar plants for industrial process heat and installations at social institutions, hospitals, and hotels —this includes the first solar district heating network in Sub-Saharan Africa. To date, it has installed over 900 solar systems, with a total collector area of 10,000 m² and saving 50 GWh of electricity annually while avoiding 2500 tons of CO2 emissions. Recognized with multiple international awards, SOLTRAIN continues to be a leader in advancing solar energy in the region.
