Waste in South African Municipalities is most landfilled, contributing to the national carbon footprint and not properly valorising the intrinsic energy value of the landfilled residues. The WROSE model can assist municipal officials in their decision-making by assessing the greenhouse gas emissions from landfills and identifying feasible mitigation pathways deriving from the application of alternative waste management and waste-to-energy options. To this purpose, the collaboration with the World Bank and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) resulted in an enhanced version of the WROSE model, thanks to the development of country-specific emission factors and scenarios and the creation of a dedicated website, including a countrywide map of the highest emitting Metro municipalities.
