Research Area:
Green Hydrogen and PtX
Project Status:
Ongoing
This program aims to develop a comprehensive research and development capability for electrolyser cell and stack technology at Stellenbosch University (SU), addressing the following key research questions:
- How can innovative materials and designs enhance the efficiency and performance of electrolyser cells and stacks?
- What are the challenges and opportunities in reverse-engineering commercial PEM electrolyser systems for local innovation?
- How can additive manufacturing be leveraged to produce advanced electrolyser components with improved functionality?
Progress includes demonstrating laboratory-scale alkaline and PEM stacks, commissioning an 8.7 kW PEM electrolyser, and initiating reverse-engineering efforts. Deliverables include an in-house electrolyser stack, postgraduate degrees, and scientific publications, positioning SU as a leader in hydrogen technology research and a key partner in green hydrogen initiatives.
