Melville Place is a new residential development under construction in Ottery, Cape Town. The complex consists of 346 apartments and is aimed at affordable rentals for lower income working couples. Melville Place includes a gym and children’s after-care facilities. The complex is unique, as it recycles all sewage water on site, collects rainwater and is water neutral. The complex uses no municipal water and treats its own black water. The buildings will generate nearly 50% of their own electricity needs. The building is equipped with a hot water system consisting of 343 m² of evacuated tube collectors with a thermal capacity of 240 kWth, supported by a backup heat pump. In one year, this installation gives a solar yield of 244.90 MWh and is responsible for the avoidance of 84700.00 kilograms of CO2 emissions.
