Mariendahl Farm Residence provides low-income housing for Stellenbosch University employees and their families, with homes donated to eligible staff during their employment at the university. Many of the residents of the farm are currently employed at Stellenbosch University as security, kitchen staff and cleaners, amongst other jobs. Other residents work as labourers on Mariendahl farm. Families living in these houses consist of 2 – 5 people. Solar Water Heating (SWH) systems have been installed, allowing residents to save on electricity costs since they are responsible for all electricity costs of the households (including electrical geyser). In one year, this installation gives a solar yield of 11.50 MWh and is responsible for the avoidance of 3975.80 kilograms of CO2 emissions.
