In 2016, CRSES conducted a feasibility study to help the Klein Karoo International Tannery, using Low Sulphur Oil (LSO), lower fuel costs and enhance sustainability as it expanded production. CRSES recommended a 556 m² solar thermal system with flat plate collectors, 40,000 liters of buffer storage, and a ground-mounted installation. From January to December 2019, this system reduced the tannery’s fuel consumption by 51,785 liters, saving R432,106 and supplying 48.1% of its annual energy needs (873 MWh). This shift also cut CO₂ emissions by 152,766 kg per year, marking a significant improvement in the tannery’s environmental impact.
