The Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies engages with the scientific and general communities in a number of ways. The Centre plays a coordinating role for a variety of contract research projects where specialists from various disciplines participate to investigate renewable energy resources, conversion technologies and applications. The Centre has a staff of four engineers, all with masters’ degrees, specialising in renewable energy that assist with the technical work. In addition the Centre can call on the expertise of the wider University community as well as other experts, even from abroad, should they be required to work on the project.
The Centre organises various training events and symposia for the renewable energy industry. These events range from one day workshops to short courses and conferences. An annual, national symposium for postgraduate students in renewable energy is held in November and the Centre was also instrumental in organising the first Southern African Solar Energy Conference in 2012.
The Centre is driving three national, flagship projects:
- South African Wind Energy Centre (SAWEC)
- Solar Energy Map of Southern Africa
- Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) Pilot Plant and Research Facility
Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Consulting Services
Solar PV has become a very price-competitive and popular solution to off-set electricity usage in South Africa and especially for large users of electricity with available land or rooftop area. The Centres specialists guide companies through the process of procuring and installing solar rooftop PV systems resulting in an optimal solution. Find out more from the following brochure, CRSES PV Consulting Services.
Solar Process Heat Consulting Services
South Africa is situated in one of the highest solar resource areas in the world making it one of the best places to use of solar energy for industrial process heat. In fact, studies show that industries often receive more solar energy on their premises than they need in their processes. Our expert engineers assist industries to make use of this opportunity by getting the best solar thermal system for their needs in order to achieve the highest return on investment through saving expensive boiler fuel.
The Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies (CRSES) developed educational material on renewable energy for schools. The aim of the material is to support teachers to deal with the challenge of climate change and to facilitate the understanding and use of renewable energy.
