CURRENT RESEARCH

WIND ENERGY

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University is researching new generation permanent magnet generators for wind turbines, power electronics required to integrate wind turbines into the electrical grid, as well as the utilisation of wind energy in very cold climates, such as the SANAE base in Antarctica. This group, with the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Cape Town, forms the Wind Energy Spoke. In 2011 a spin-off company was formed to commercialise some of the designs of this group. This group is also cooperating with Northwest University on wind turbine blade design and manufacturing.
