CURRENT RESEARCH

BIO-ENERGY

The Departments of Microbiology and Process Engineering, at Stellenbosch University, and Chemical Engineering, at the University of Cape Town, were awarded the Senior Chair of Energy Research in Biofuels and Other Alternative Clean Fuels in 2007. The primary research in this group is the second generation conversion processes of lignocelluloses into bio-ethanol, as well as the sustainable production of bio-diesel, bio-gas and bio-char products via thermal processes. This group collaborates with the junior Chair of Energy Research in Biofuels, currently held by Prof Susan Marx at Northwest University.
